Striped Tape Arrays

چکیده
A growing number of applications require high capacity, high throughput tertiary storage systems [1] [2]. We are investigating how data striping ideas apply to arrays of magnetic tape drives. Data striping increases throughput and reduces response time for large accesses to a storage system. Striped magnetic tape systems are particularly appealing because many inexpensive magnetic tape drives have low bandwidth; striping may o er dramatic performance improvements for these systems. There are several important issues in designing striped tape systems: the choice of tape drives and robots, whether to stripe within or between robots, and the choice of the best scheme for distributing data on cartridges. One of the most troublesome problems in striped tape arrays is the synchronization of transfers across tape drives. Another issue is how improved devices will a ect the desirability of striping in the future. We present the results of simulations comparing the performance of striped tape systems to non-striped systems.

Challenges for Tertiary Storage in Multimedia Servers
The low cost per megabyte of optical disk and magnetic tape storage make these technologies particularly attractive for use in large capacity storage servers, including multimedia servers. However, these devices have performance problems that range from high costs for many optical drives to low performance and lack of random access in tape drives. We evaluate the performance on multimedia appli...
متن کاملBi-sensory, striped representations: comparative insights from owl and platypus.
Bi-sensory striped arrays are described in owl and platypus that share some similarities with the other variant of bi-sensory striped array found in primate and carnivore striate cortex: ocular dominance columns. Like ocular dominance columns, the owl and platypus striped systems each involve two different topographic arrays that are cut into parallel stripes, and interdigitated, so that higher...

1 Abstract In this paper, we evaluate storage system alternatives for movies-on-demand video servers. We begin by characterizing the movies-on-demand workload. We brieey discuss performance in disk arrays. First, we study disk farms in which one movie is stored per disk. This is a simple scheme, but it wastes substantial disk bandwidth, since disks holding less popular movies are under-utilized...

With the prolifemtion of multimedia applications, even secondary storage systems do not have sufficient storage capacity to meet the demand, only tertiary storage systems can provide the necessary storage economically. We have been examining the feasibility of “‘scalable tape archiver” where any number of commodity 8mm based robotics can be connected to allow the development of arbitrary sized ...
